I have a Monero daemon (monerod) setup on a public facing VPS server. How can I check it's running fine by using a web browser, or what type of linux command can I run?

I'm using the default ports.

You can easily test via the daemon RPC interface. Assuming default ports used, you can browse to:

http://x.x.x.x:18081/get_info

Replacing x.x.x.x with your servers IP address. This will return some JSON like follows if the node is up and there are no firewalls blocking it:
