I configured a full Monero wallet accessible only through localhost or Tor. The node is working fine, so I configured monero-wallet-rpc to be accessible with user/password authentication through Tor.

Until here, everything is fine. I can connect through my PHP script or directly through Tor browser entering the required data and retrieve the wallet balance, generate new address etc.

The problem seems that it appears when I open several connections at once, then the server ends giving a timeout with "empty reply from server". And the weird thing is that even then I can access the monero wallet RPC using the onion address directly in the browser but the same data in the PHP script or curl does not work.

My monero.conf is the following:

How I start my Monero daemon:

monerod --detach

How I start my Monero wallet RPC:

nohup monero-wallet-rpc --rpc-bind-port 18089 --rpc-bind-ip --rpc-login rpc_user:rpc_pass --password='password' --wallet-file wallet_name &

My Tor hidden service config:

HiddenServiceDir /var/lib/tor/monero_service/
HiddenServicePort 18089

I've also increased the open file descriptors to the maximum available on the VPS.

I had the same problem some time ago when I configured a bitcoin node but increasing the number of open file descriptors fixed the issue, but in my case of Monero this is not helping.

Does anyone here know where the error could be or if there's missing config? I am going crazy to fix this.

  • "then the server ends giving a timeout with "empty reply from server"" <- Have you tried increasing CURLOPT_CONNECTTIMEOUT / CURLOPT_TIMEOUT?
